Speaker, Producer, Presenter, Host

One of the joys of having travelled so far and so often, and having seen so many amazing things, is that I have a photo gallery full of the weirdest and maddest memories. I have walls of photos above my computer screen, behind my chair and in my dining room – whenever I’m having a bad day, all I have to do is look up, turn around, or go for a wander to be inspired, and reminded of just how lucky I’ve been. Here are some of my favourites…

Getting ready for a right royal double tomorrow. I Getting ready for a right royal double tomorrow. I start by talking to 20 top execs under the watchful eye of Her Majesty, and end in the evening in front of 500 at the Honourable Artillery Company. Ten-shun!
@spotify is 20 years old, and it's been well-docum @spotify is 20 years old, and it's been well-documented that I told Daniel Ek @eldsjal when it launched that his service couldn't make money through "the occasional advert" in between the music.

Here's a clip of that interview between two (very (very)) young chaps...just listen for all the things we talk about that put this firmly in a bygone era:

- pirated downloads being the big problem in music
- the idea that people wouldn't want to pay a subscription for their entertainment
- the service was only on the desktop ("surely a mobile application would be the killer app?")
- lack of mobile connections was still a reason that Spotify wouldn't kill-off owning music

Gosh, the innocence! Daniel - do you remember that interview? How much of the future could you already see back then?

We also spoke about the clever audio compression algorithm, in which the first few seconds of the song played in a lower quality to avoid much buffering time.

And I "explained" to him again and again how commerical music radio needed 9 minutes of ads an hour to cover its costs, and therefore his idea couldn't possibly make money.

What I hadn't understood at the time was the power of venture capital to sustain something for years and years...and years. Spotify finally made a profit in 2024.

So technically, for 15 years, I was right...
