4. The sun is tiny in a wide angle photo. These two pix were taken with the same lens. What you think is the sun is actually a bigger part of the sensor completely blown out by the glare. Putting the filter on reveals its true size.

2. It's amazing how well-lit the world is with even 5% of the sun exposed. 
BUT
3. The ambient light was just "wrong". The lizard part of my brain said that with the sun that high in the sky, the landscape was too dim.
AND
4. Leave the photos to the professionals, and just enjoy the experience.
